PHIL TAYLOR thumped Scott Waites 16-2 on Sunday night at Wolverhampton Civic Hall to make it three-out-of-three Grand Slam of Darts victories.
Waites, 80-1 ante-post, had been magnificently tenacious in all of his previous matches in the event, particularly in knock-out successes over Gary Anderson, Simon Whitlock and then Terry Jenkins in his afternoon semi-final.
But the 14-time world champion never let him get a foothold in the clash on theway to a 21st title of the year.
The Power, a general 4-9 before the off, landed six of his first seven darts at a double, went ten legs clear with a 170-checkout and bent the wire for a nine-darter in the final leg.
His three-dart average was 103.94 on the back of 26 ton-plusses, 14 140-plusses and five 180s.
Not that Scotty Too Hotty scored too badly himself even if the occasion may have got to him (the £50,000 second prize was the biggest pay-day of his non-joiner career). Indeed, Waites got on the board at 4-0 with a 105-finish.
Taylor is now a standout 8-15 with Boylesports to keep his PDC World Championship crown at Alexandra Palace in December.
James Wade has been eased to 17-2 second-favourite by Betfred and Paddy Power. Raymond van Barneveld is next in the lists at 12-1, followed by Anderson at 16-1. It is 33-1 bar.
Waites is now the 7-2 co-favourite of three, alongside Martin Adams and Tony O'Shea, for the BDO spoils in the new year. Defending Lakeside champion Ted Hankey is 10-1.
