Super Serena shortens for fifth Wimbledon win
SERENA WILLIAMS was 6-5 favourite early last night to draw level with big sister Venus and win a fifth Wimbledon singles crown after ousting last year’s winner Petra Kvitova 6-3 7-5 on Tuesday.
Serena, who was 6-1 after disappointing at the All England Club last year, was 3-1 before this year’s Wimbledon started having proved her fitness by winning two clay-court titles.
Both women produced a display of heavy serving and ferocious groundstrokes but it was Serena’s greater power and will to win that won the day. She said: “I had to step it up. If I want to win the title I have to raise my level.”
In the last four Williams will meet second seed Victoria Azarenka, who fought her way past Eastbourne champion Tamira Paszek 6-3 7-6 later in the evening.
Sabine Lisicki showed her fighting qualities to force her fellow German Angelique Kerber to a deciding set, but it was all to no avail as the fast-improving Kerber triumphed 6-3 6-7 7-5.
Agnieszka Radwanska was taken to a decider by Maria Kirilenko before triumphing 7-5 4-6 7-5 once the match got switched to Centre Court from No. 1.
