Sunderland 5-1 for drop after defeat at Molineux
MARTIN O'NEILL takes charge at Sunderland on Monday morning with his new team 5-1 for the drop after a 2-1 defeat against Wolves at Molineux.
The Black Cats took the lead early in the second half through Kieran Richardson, but the match turned when Sebastian Larsson had a penalty saved for Sunderland and Steven Fletcher headed an equaliser within a minute.
Fletcher added the winner soon after.
There are still six teams shorter in the relegation betting than Sunderland, including Wolves, though.
Newcastle are counting the cost of Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea after Steven Taylor was ruled out for the rest of the season with an Achilles problem.
Alan Pardew was also forced to withdraw Taylor’s central defensive partner Fabricio Coloccini in the first half with a thigh strain, and the Spaniard is doubtful for next weekend’s trip to Norwich.
Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez is expected to be out for around a month after beingcarried off with an ankle injury in their 1-0 win at Aston Villa.
Celtic beat Dundee United 1-0 to again trail Rangers by four points in the Scottish Premier. The Bhoys are 11-10 for the title with the champions and leaders on offer at 4-5.
