8-1 Japan stun Spain as early favourites struggle

SPAIN’S Olympic men's football side were stunned by 8-1 outsiders Japan, who beat the outright second favourites 1-0 at Hampden Park on Thursday afternoon.

Japan wasted glorious opportunities to add to Yuki Otsu’s goal against a Spanish side who were poor throughout and deserved to lose even allowing for Inigo Martinez’s first-half red card for a professional foul.

Coral pushed Spain out to 4-1 from 5-2 to win gold, while impressive Japan were slashed to 16-1 by Betfred after taking command in Group D, in which Morocco and Honduras drew 2-2.

The early matches turned into a graveyard for favourite backers before Uruguay became the first winning market leader, though they were made to work hard for maximum points in the 2-1 victory over UAE. Betfred cut Uruguay to 11-2 after Nicolas Lodeiro’s winner.

Team GB’s women are 12-1 from 20-1 to win Olympic gold after beating New Zealand 1-0 on Wednesday.
