Ronaldo odds-on to be crowned world's best
CRITICS of Cristiano Ronaldo can no longer say he fails to deliver on the biggest stage for Portugal with Europe’s best player continuing to light up Euro 2012.
Ronaldo, who scored the only goal of the game as Portugal earned a spot in the semi-finals thanks to a 1-0 win over Czech Republic on, is now 1-2 favourite with Hills to win the Ballon d’Or with old rival Lionel Messi at 6-4 to take the award for the fourth straight year.
However, this looks to be Ronaldo’s year. He won La Liga with Real Madrid and has scored three goals at Euro 2012 as he grows into the competition with back-to-back Uefa man of the match awards from the triumphs over Holland and the Czechs.
Punters have been latching on to Ronaldo and he was a hugely popular first goalscorer pick at prices as large as 4-1 in the Czech success and bookmakers are still counting the cost. Alex Donohue of Labrokes called Ronaldo heroics a “terrible result” and Bet365’s Steve Freeth added: “It was a truly shocking outcome, not least because Portugal are also the worst result in our outright liabilities.”
Hills estimated the damage at between £1.5m-2m and said it was their second-worst result of the tournament after England’s 1-0 victory over Ukraine.
Ronaldo is 4-1 favourite with Ladbrokes to claim the player of the tournament award and the Real Madrid superstar was also trading at 9-2 to take the Euro 2012 Golden Boot.
