Ireland 4-1 for last eight after Trap names squad
GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI named his provisional 23-man Ireland squad for Euro 2012 on Monday and the Italian’s charges are 4-1 to qualify from Group C.
Winger James McClean has been selected after an impressive debut season for Sunderland but Wigan midfielder James McCarthy has ruled himself out due to his father’s illness and Wes Hoolahan of Norwich was also omitted.
Ireland are 100-1 to win Euro 2012 and 18-1 to finish top of a tough section that includes defending champions Spain, Italy and Croatia.
Key strikers Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle were also named but
Everton’s Seamus Coleman is among the six men who have been put on standby for the finals.
Two of the tournament favourites, Germany and Holland, also named their provisional squads.
Germany, 7-2 second-favourites for the Euros, picked uncapped youngster Julian Draxler and Arsenal’s injured defender Per Mertesacker.
The Dutch, who are 15-2 to triumph in Poland and Ukraine – announced a 35-strong group of players which included Barcelona midfielder Ibrahim Afellay but there was no
place for Bas Dost, the top goalscorer in Holland this season.
