Huddersfield 8-1 for back-to-back promotions
Huddersfield will be playing in the Championship next season after defeating Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United 8-7 on penalties in the League One play-off final.
The match finished 0-0 after extra-time and Huddersfield keeper Alex Smithies rose to the challenge in the shootout – saving three penalties and scoring from the spot himself before Sheffield United keeper Steve Simonson blazed over from 12 yards.
Huddersfield are 25-1 with bet365 to win the second tier next season and 8-1 to follow in Southampton’s footsteps by securing back-to-back promotions.
United must knuckle down for a second successive season in League One although they are bet365’s 5-1 favourites to win the third tier title next term.
Shane Long has spoken of his desire to earn a starting place at Euro 2012 and he did his chances no harm by scoring the only goal as Ireland defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium yesterday.
Long, who is 12-1 to top of Ireland’s scoring charts in Poland/Ukraine, struck the decisive blow in the 78th minute – extending the side’s unbeaten run to 13 games.
