RYANGIGGS is as short as 4-1 to be named Sports Personality of the Year after concerted support throughout Tuesday.

The Manchester United winger had been as big as 16-1 when the 10-strong shortlist was announced on Monday afternoon, but he is now no better than 6-1.

The Welshman had been a barely considered 100-1 shot with Hills before the final names were announced and matche at huge price on the exchanges, but he now has just Jenson Button and Jessica Ennis ahead of him in the market.

Button has been odds-on for some time now and remains clear favourite, but the plunge on Giggs means he is now as big as 9-10, while Ennis is 5-1.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: "A small-stakes nibble on Giggs has developed into a full-blown gobble of a gamble today, and in total over £9,000 has been bet on the United player at all rates down from 999-1 to his current price of 6-1 on Betfair.

"One senses the punt has further momentum in it, too."
