Europa League: Victory sees Liverpool top group
THE terrible record of Russian clubs in Britain continued Thursday night as Liverpool defeated Anzhi Makhachkala and their troupe of big-money signings 1-0 in their Europa League Group A clash at Anfield.
Stewart Downing registered the game’s only goal after 53 minutes.
The result moves Liverpool to the top of the group after Udinese were beaten 3-1 away to Young Boys.
On a largely positive night for the English teams, Newcastle justified odds of 4-6 by beating Bruges 1-0 at home.
Gabriel Obertan netted the winner for Toon after 48 minutes.
Tottenham remain winless in the Europa League but recovered from a goal down to draw 1-1 away to Slovenian side Maribor.
Spurs remain third in Group J at the halfway point after Gylfi Sigurdsson cancelled out Robert Beric’s 42nd-minute strike just before the hour.
Rodrigo Palacio earned an 88th-minute winner for Inter at home to Partizan.
That was enough to keep the Milanese on top of Group H after Rubin also won 1-0.
