Drogba guides Chelsea to Champions League glory

Chelsea's long wait to get their hands on the Champions League Trophy is at an end after Didier Drogba hit the winning penalty to seal a 4-3 shootout success over Bayern Munich after the match had finished 1-1 after extra-time.

The Ivory Coast international had rescued his side in normal time levelling the scores with a bullet header from an 88th-minute corner, and he displayed nerves of steel from the penalty spot to send Manuel Neuer the wrong way and delight punters who had backed Chelsea to win the trophy at pre-match odds of 2-1.

Bayern had been heavily backed on the day of the game resulting in their 90-minutes odds shortening from 5-6 to 7-10 before kick-off and the gamble looked like being landed when Thomas Muller headed home Toni Kroos's cross in the 83rd minute.

Bayern were unable to hold on to their advantage and they wasted a glorious opportunity in the first period of extra-time when Arjen Robben had a penalty saved by Petr Cech after Drogba had felled Franck Ribery.

It was Drogba's only indiscretion and not enough to prevent him from landing the man-of-the-match odds at a best-priced 10-1.

Chelsea were available at 10-1 at the start of the group stage but their outright price drifted to 28-1 after they lost 3-1 away to Napoli in the last 16 first-leg tie. Bet365 have handed the Blues a 14-1 quote to defend their title next year.
