70-1 Siem books Open berth with Paris success

A CLOSING round of 67 earned German Marcel Siem not only the French Open title on Sunday but also a place in next week’s Open Championshp and his first appearance in the world’s top 100.

Siem started the tournament a 70-1 shot and triumphed despite a remarkable birdie blitz from Francesco Molinari, who double-bogeyed the first hole to fall eight shots off the lead but then went on a run of nine birdies and set the clubhouse target with a round of 64.

Molinari was eventually pipped by one shot but his showing was enough to move him into the automatic Ryder Cup qualification slots.

French hope Raphael Jacquelin could have forced sudden death by holing his second to the 18th, but a par four left him third on his own on six under.
