33-1 City break United hearts in stunning climax
MANCHESTER CITY scored two goals in stoppage time on Sunday to steal the title from arch-rivals Manchester United in the most astonishing end to a season in Premier League history.
Needing to beat QPR to match Manchester United's 1-0 win at
Sunderland, City were as big as 33-1 with Boylesports – and trading at 40 on Betfair –as they trailed 2-1 with five minutes of added time
due to be played.
However, Edin Dzeko headed them level and then Sergio Aguero sent the Etihad Stadium into a frenzy by sealing City's first title since 1968 and breaking United hearts after they had done their bit at the Stadium of Light.
It was an incredible afternoon of football and not surprisingly it
broke all records in terms of in-play betting. Ladbrokes reported that
1,500 bets a minute were placed in the second half as City resumed 1-0 up as 1-16 shots for the title and then saw QPR move to the brink of pulling off a 20-1 upset thanks to goals from Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie.
For all his huge spending, Roberto Mancini deserves great credit for
winning the Premier League well ahead of schedule as City had been 9-2 before the season started behind 2-1 favourites United.
It will be a different story next season under the weight of
expectation as City are 13-8 to retain their crown with United 11-4.
Chelsea are third favourites at 5-1 and Arsenal are 11-1.
And Ladbrokes, despite also having City at the head of the market,
fear that Mancini will still be under huge pressure if a repeat proves
difficult.
The Magic Sign go 1-2 that the Italian is still Manchester City
manager at the start of next season yet 7-4 that he remains in the
hotseat on the final day of the campaign.
Bet365 go just 12-1 that City win the league for each of the next four seasons.
It was goal difference that ultimately decided the title, but
Ladbrokes don't expect such a tight race next season and offer 33-1
that the top two finish level on points again.
Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to face a serious rebuilding programme
over the summer and it may be that weaknesses in United have led
bet365 to offer their quote of 11-8 that the Manchester clubs fill the
top two places again. The same firm make City 6-4 to win more trophies than United, who are 9-4 shots.
