Al Kazeem heads to York after 'pleasing' work

AL KAZEEM will bid for a fourth consecutive Group 1 success in the Juddmonte International at York on August 21, trainer Roger Charlton revealed on Saturday.

After completing his Group 1 hat-trick in the Coral-Eclipse on July 6, Charlton nominated either the International or Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on September 7 as his two most likely options.

Although a trip to Ireland has not been totally ruled out, York has been confirmed as the next port of call for John Deer's Dubawi five-year-old, who completed a "very pleasing" workout on Saturday morning.

Charlton said: "The owner is very keen to take one step at a time and the next step is the Juddmonte International. I don't think the Juddmonte was every really off the agenda, the only race that had been was the King George.

"Nothing is set in stone and, as I said, it's one step at a time. I'm very happy with the horse."

Despite winning his three Group 1 races on good to firm ground, Charlton was keen to avoid fast ground at Ascot last month and ground conditions still have the potential to alter plans in the coming weeks.

Also the winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup this season, Al Kazeem's main end-of-season target is believed to be the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on October 6 based on Charlton's previous comments.
