York ground quickens for start of Ebor meeting
THE ground for the start of York’s Ebor meeting on Wednesday has been changed to good, good to firm places (from good) following a dry day on Sunday.
A total of 7mm of rain fell on the Knavesmire on Saturday but according to the Met Office forecast that could be the last of the showers as the outlook for the week is predominantly dry with cloudy and sunny spells.
Anthea Morshead, assistant clerk of the course, said on Monday morning: "We had quite a breezy day yesterday and it was a nice afternoon which has continued this morning.
"The forecast for the week is largely dry, variable cloud with sunny intervals and temperatures around 21C, which aren't as high as early indications."
When asked about the prospect of watering, she added: "It's not something we'll rule out and is a case of playing it day by day. We would be happy to start the meeting on ground near where we are now."
A GoingStick reading of 7.3 was taken at 6.30am on Monday and the declarations for day one, featuring the Juddmonte International, are due later in the morning.
