The Fugue impresses in Musidora Stakes romp

Report: York, Wednesday

Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Group 2) 1m2½f, 3yo fillies

QIPCO 1,000 Guineas fourth The Fugue laid down a marker for the Investec Oaks when she posted an impressive success in the Musidora Stakes at York.

The John Gosden-trained filly is now Coral's clear 7-2 favourite (from 12) for the Epsom Classic on June 1 after she overcame odds-on Musidora favourite Twirl in style, winning by four lengths under William Buick.

"They're all talking about the Oaks so fingers crossed," said The Fugue's owner-breeder Madeleine Lloyd-Webber. "She's bred to do it and get a mile and a half. The ground would have to stay good, but why wouldn't we."

Like Coral, William Hill were taken with the performance and make the daughter of Dansili their 7-2 Oaks co-favourite (from 10). Paddy Power initially went 6-1 (from 12), but were forced into 9-2.

Also impressed was Buick, who said: "She picked up well and is class. At Epsom you need tactical speed and she has that."

Gosden, who has yet to train an Oaks winner, added: "The ground made a difference to her today. It's not ideal running in a Guineas off a maiden win but she is a lovely filly and I think she was a bit unlucky that day.

"She ran great but the winner [Homecoming Queen] scooted off. We are back on nice ground and all being well we will go to Epsom with her. I just wouldn't want to see it go soft. If it did she would revert to the French."
