Express out to book Guineas place in trial

TRAINER Ed McMahon is hoping Winning Express can book her place in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas with a big run in Wednesday's Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes.

A general 20-1 chance for the Classic having finished second to Rosdhu Queen in last season's Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes, Winning Express on Thursday featured among 24 entries for the Guineas trial on day one of Newmarket's Craven meeting.

McMahon said: "She's wintered very well and has got a very good action - it will be nice to see whether she can step up to the mark from a two-year-old to a three-year-old.

"She’ll definitely get seven furlongs but the Guineas is another furlong after that, but if she performs well then I'm deemed to let her take her chance in the Guineas."

Richard Hannon has four entries, although only Maureen has been earmarked for the race at this stage.

"Maureen is a definite runner, we are very happy with her and the 1,000 Guineas is then the plan,” said assistant trainer Richard Hannon jnr.

"Sky Lantern will also be entered in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury [on April 20] because she would have to carry a three pound penalty at Newmarket. It’s about 50-50 where she goes at the moment, possibly just favouring Newbury.

"Of our other entries, Zurigha has been declared to run at Kempton on Saturday while we just wanted to have a look at the race for Light Up My Life, who may prove better suited by a mile."
