Sandown's Tolworth Hurdle card called off

SATURDAY'S meeting at Sandown, featuring the Grade 1 32Red Tolworth Novices' Hurdle, has been abandoned due to areas of waterlogging on both the hurdles and chase courses.

Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper told Racing UK: "The rain this afternoon has left us with at least two places where it is definitely unraceable at the moment, and we've no option to bypass those particular areas.

"We're faced with a forecast saying we could get more showers later in the day, plus other pieces of rain tomorrow morning. We'd got to the stage where we would be delaying the inevitable."

The Tolworth Hurdle will now be run next Saturday (January 11) at Kempton on Lanzarote Hurdle day. The race will be reopened for entries on Tuesday.

At Wincanton, where there was an inspection on Friday morning, clerk of the course Barry Johnson is confident racing will be on, with another check set for 7am.

He said: "We had 13 millimetres last night but the course has taken it brilliantly. The hurdles course is fine, on the chase course I have three fences that are giving me cause for concern.

"We'll have to see how much more rain we'll get. We could get seven or eight millimetres today and I'd be very confident we'll be fine. My only concern is the chase fences but if we have to knock out one or two that's what we'll do."

The two meetings form Channel 4's live coverage on Saturday, but with Sandown abandoned Wincanton’s races will be delayed by 15 minutes so four races can be broadcast, along with four races on the all-weather from Lingfield.

Sunday's meeting at Plumpton which features the At The Races Sussex National, and Monday's fixture at Taunton are both subject to inspections at 11am on Saturday, with the going at the tracks described as heavy, waterlogged in places.
