Wincanton off after 14mm of rain overnight
SATURDAY'S meeting at Wincanton has been abandoned after the track failed a 7am inspection. With 14mm since 1.30am, and rain still falling, the course have admitted defeat with the track waterlogged.
Barry Johnson, clerk of the course, said: "We're all a bit gutted as we got a lot more than expected. At 5pm last night we were perfectly raceable and could have taken 5-6mm, which we were forecast, but we got 14mm and there's nothing we can do about that."
The loss will affect Channel 4's afternoon coverage as four races from the Somerset venue were due to be broadcast. Instead the programme will feature the four races from Lingfield (2.00, 2.35, 3.10 and 3.45), scheduled to replace the Sandown card lost on Friday afternoon, and four from Newcastle (1.40, 2.15, 2.50 and 3.25).
The going at Lingfield is Standard, while at Newcastle conditions are described as heavy, soft in places after a dry night.
The weather is affecting more than just Saturday's cards, with Plumpton inspecting again at 7am on Sunday to decide if racing can go ahead that afternoon. Taunton was forced to call off racing on Monday after the course failed an inspection at 10.30am on Saturday morning due to waterlogging.
And the bad weather looks set to play havoc with the fixture list next week, with Ludlow already calling an inspection for 8.30am on Tuesday for its meeting on Wednesday, while Fontwell's Thursday meeting is also in danger, with an inspection called for 8am on Sunday.
