Leading fancies miss Northumberland Plate
ASCOT STAKES winner Well Sharp and De Rigueur, leading ante-post fancies for Saturday's John Smith's Northumberland Plate, will miss the prestigious handicap after they did not feature among the 45 confirmations on Monday.
Well Sharp, who beat Plate favourite Tiger Cliff at Royal Ascot last week, was as low as 9-1, while De Rigueuer, who has had a setback, was 12-1.
Top-weight Repeater was also taken out so the Aidan O'Brien-trained El Salvador now heads the weights from Biographer, the 2011 winner Tominator and Chester Cup victor Address Unknown.
Henry Ponsonby, Tiger Cliff's owner, was confident of turning the tables on Well Sharp on Saturday before his defection and said: "It was a tremendous run at Ascot from Tiger Cliff.
"We just had one too good and we hit a few traffic problems."
The going at Newcastle was described on Monday as good to firm, good in places and Ponsonby added that some rain would help Tiger Cliff.
