Apollo Maverick lands Nakayama Grand Jump
Report: Japan, Saturday
Nakayama: Nakayama Grand Jump (Grade 1) 2m5f, turf, 4yo+
CONNECTIONS of Apollo Maverick (Masahiro Horii/Yusuke Igarashi) expected a big performance in the Nakayama Grand Jump and the five-year-old delivered in style when recording a five-length win in one of the world's richest jumps races.
After winning the Nakayama Daishoga - another of Japan's top chases - in December, Apollo Maverick was sent off odds-on favourite to claim the 135 million yen (£785,295) contest, which is an idiosyncratic test around a tight figure-of-eight circuit.
He had far too much class for Cosmo Soyuz with Meisho Bushido a neck back in third.
The Nakayama Grand Jump was won by the Willie Mullins-trained and Ruby Walsh-ridden Blackstairmountain 12 months ago, but there were no British or Irish runners in this year's race.
