Teddy's Promise a shock 16-1 winner in La Brea

Report: USA, Saturday

Santa Anita: La Brea Stakes (Grade 1) 7f, dirt, 3yo fillies

THE old year ended with a shock result in the final Grade 1 event of the season as 16-1 outsider Teddy's Promise (Ron Ellis/Victor Espinoza) stunned Santa Anita with a 2¼- length victory in the La Brea.

Not only had she never before won a graded stakes, she hadbeen well beaten in three previous attempts at only minor stakes company.

She had, though, appeared to turn the corner as she scored in her two most recent starts in optional claimers. "The last time she ran, I really liked her," Espinoza said.

"Today, I thought she was ready, and I thought she would like it better over here on the dirt. I had so much horse today I wasn't expecting anybody to come near me. She's a runner."

Three-time Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent, sent off odds-on favourite, was a disappointing sixth of nine in the $300,000 event.
