Rachel Alexandra has surgery after foaling
USA: Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, underwent surgery on Wednesday night due to a "serious" complication following birth.
Winner of the Preakness Stakes and Woodward Stakes against the males in 2009, Rachel Alexandra was rushed to surgery after giving birth to a healthy Bernardini filly to repair a bruised area in her small colon.
According to a statement released by Stonestreet Farm, seven-year-old Rachel Alexandra is in recovery after surgery although a full prognosis cannot be determined.
Owner Barbara Banke said: "We are solely focused on making sure Rachel is as comfortable as possible. She is showing the same strength and courage now that she demonstrated on the track.
"Our hearts are broken by this turn of events and I can only ask that you send your thoughts and prayers to Rachel now."
