Point Of Entry injured
in Manhattan triumph
USA: Leading US turf performer Point Of Entry faces a spell on the sidelines after sustaining an injury in winning the Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park on Saturday.
The five-year-old, who was winning his fifth Grade 1 event in the $500,000 contest, has suffered a condylar fracture of his near-hind cannonbone that will require surgery.
Trainer Shug McGaughey said the Breeders' Cup Turf could still be a target for Point Of Entry, whose only defeat in his last seven outings came after an unlucky passage when he was runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup.
"It's not really bad - it's just separated a little," said McGaughey, speaking to the Blood-Horse. "Under a best-case scenario, maybe we could get a race into him in September so maybe the Breeders' Cup isn't out of the question."
Owned by the Phipps family, Point Of Entry is likely to be retired at the end of the season.
