Gemologist bruised foot after Kentucky flop
USA: Gemologist, who tamely forfeited his unbeaten record in the Kentucky Derby, will miss the Belmont Stakes with a badly bruised left front foot.
The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Tiznow went to Churchill Downs on the back of his fifth career victory in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in April.
But he could finish only 16th behind I'll Have Another in last weekend's Kentucky Derby, after which Elliott Walden, president of owners WinStar Farm, said he was lame.
Gemologist will now be aimed at the Haskell at Monmouth Park on July 29.
Kentucky third Dullahan will miss the Preakness Stakes before returning to action in the Belmont on June 9. Jockey Kent Desormeaux will switch to Tiger Walk, who is trained by Ignacio Correas.
