Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Gentry dies at 87
USA: Loyd ‘Boo' Gentry, who trained the 1967 Kentucky Derby winner Proud Clarion, has died of heart failure in Lexington at the age of 87.
Gentry, best known for his association with John W Galbreath's powerful Darby Dan stables, also trained Graustark, unbeaten and set to start favourite for the 1966 Kentucky Derby before a career-ending injury in the Blue Grass Stakes. Graustark was to become an influential sire.
The Kentucky-born son of jockey and trainer Loyd Gentry snr, Boo Gentry was also the nephew of Olin Gentry, who managed Col ER Bradley's farm, responsible for six Kentucky Derby winners.
According to the Blood-Horse, Loyd Gentry jnr trained his first winner at Tijuana, Mexico, in 1946 and continued to hold a licence throughout the next six decades.
Among his other big winners were a pair of Kentucky Oaks heroines in Lalun (1955) and Hail To Patsy (1969). He also trained the 1966 Derby-Preakness winner Kauai King early in his career before closing his public stable to concentrate on Darby Dan and handing the horse over to Henry Forrest.
