Injured Winslow Homer off Kentucky Derby trail

USA: Winslow Homer, winner of the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park, is off the Triple Crown trail after suffering astress fracture in his off-fore cannonbone.

Owner Rick Porter, who races under the banner of Fox Hill Farms, spoke to the Thoroughbred Daily News.

He said: "Winslow Homer had a little sensitivity in his shin Sunday morning.

"We went over him with a fine-toothed comb and found a small stress fracture in his cannonbone, resulting in Winslow having to go on the shelf for the next 60-90 days."

Trainer Anthony Dutrow said that vet Dr Larry Bramlage will put a screw in the shin to aid healing of the fracture.

Porter said of his horse's return to racing: "Winslow should return to training in early April.

"This is another tough-luck story for me and the Fox Hill fans, but, hopefully, we will have a huge summer and fall with Winslow Homer."

A son of Unbridled's Song, Winslow Homer is a 20-1 shot for the Kentucky Derby with Coral and Blue Square.

Porter's Fox Hill Farms also campaigned last year's Kentucky Derby favourite Friesan Fire, who is set to miss the Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park this weekend after an interrupted preparation at trainer Steve Asmussen's New Orleans base.

Trainer Bob Baffert reported US juvenile champion Lookin At Lucky had a fever over the past weekend and missed some training.

"He had a little temperature and it scared me," Baffert told Daily Racing Form. "He was probably okay, but I didn't want to take any chances. He went back to the track Tuesday and looked good."

Baffert plans to get Lookin At Lucky, who was runner-up to Vale Of York in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile before winning the Grade 1 Cashcall Futurity in December, back to the races in March, but no target race has been selected.

He has said the horse will have just two starts prior to the Kentucky Derby on May 1.
