On a fast track, Govenor Charlie completed the trip in 1.47.54, eclipsing the previous best of 1.48.20 which had stood since 1961.
The three-year-old earnt 50 points under the new Churchill Downs system to determine eligibility for the Derby, and scooped $800,000 for winning the prep race.
Jockey Garcia was suitably impressed as he said: “I felt like I had a lot of horse the whole way. He’s a horse who feels like he waits on company, but when I asked him, he took off.”
Owner Mike Pegram played down Govenor Charlie's chances as he said on DRF: "If he's good enough, he'll be there. It'll be up to Bobby [Baffert]."
