Four-time Grade 1 scorer Winchester retired
USA: Winchester, a four-time Grade 1 winner on turf, has been retired.
Like his sire Theatrical, Winchester began his career with Dermot Weld before being transferred to be trained in America.
With only one win in maiden company to his name and having finished seventh in the Irish Derby on his last start, the Bertram Firestone homebred embarked on an ambitious assault on the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington in 2008and won easily by more than seven lengths.
After moving to Christophe Clement at four, he developed into one of the leading turf performers in the US.
After taking his Grade 1 tally to four with victories in the Manhattan Handicap, he landed the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at five plus the Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes as a six-year-old last year.
Winchester won six races from 24 starts, earning his connections £948,386 in prize-money. Plans for a stud position are being finalised.
