Santa Anita: Sham Stakes (Grade 3) 1m, dirt, 3yo

THE unbeaten Secret Circle  (Bob Baffert/Rafael Bejarano) is the first of two Breeders' Cup winners in action this weekend at Santa Anita.

Odds-on winner of the inaugural Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint at Churchill Downs two months ago, the colt makes his first start around two turns in the Sham Stakes, a Grade 3 event over 1m on dirt and recognised as the first port of call on this year's Kentucky Derby trail.

On Sunday, Turf Sprint winner Regally Ready face six rivals in the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes overthe Santa Anita downhill turf sprint course.

Stamina is the question for Secret Circle, who has never raced beyond 6f. The blinkers are off as he bids to extend his winning record to four in the $100,000 Sham, which used to be run over 1m1f.

"The Sham at one mile now is a good spot for horses whose potential for longer distances you're not certain of," said trainer Bob Baffert. "We're going to find out more about Secret Circle in this race."
