BLACK ONYX (Kelly Breen/Joe Bravo) will take his chance in the Kentucky Derby after a surprise 15-1 triumph on his stakes debut on the Polytrack in the Spiral Stakes.

Connections are ready to pay the $6,000 late nomination fee to ensure a place in the Triple Crown series for the Gulfstream allowance winner, who came from midpack to beat highly rated Uncaptured by a length and a half in Saturday's $550,000 event.

Odds-on favourite Crop Report (Graham Motion/Joel Rosario), winner of a Newmarket maiden in October for William Haggas, recorded a last-to-first victory for Team Valor.
