Gay Kelleway scores with Uphold at Deauville

Report: France, Saturday

Deauville: Prix du Tallis 1m4f

GAY KELLEWAY was in the money at Deauville on Saturday when her raider Uphold made all the running to land the €21,000 Prix du Tallis.

Racing over 1m4f on Polytrack, the five-year-old was given a fine ride by former French champ Ioritz Mendizabal to land the conditions contest by a nose from Falun.

Returned a 79-10 chance, Uphold won first prize of €10,500 (about £8,750) which is a much bigger pot than the £1,500 he had been playing for in claimers on home shores this winter.

Kelleway said : "I thought we were better off going at Deauville than running for £4,000 at Lingfield next week and it worked  out a treat. The horse got a soft lead which he likes and kept finding in the straight.

"I picked up some decent prize money there last year with Layline and Eastern Gift and Iwill now give Uphold a break and take him back to France when the racing gets going again in March."
