Tom O'Ryan set to have surgery on broken pelvis

TOM O'RYAN, the Racing Post's highly-respected northern reporter, hopes to take a big step forward on the road to recovery on Wednesday as he is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair his broken pelvis.

O'Ryan, 58, suffered serious back, pelvis and hip injuries when struck by a fence post in a freak agricultural accident two weeks ago, and had a successful operation on his damaged vertebrae last week.

Speaking from Hull Royal Infirmary, where he was airlifted after the accident, O'Ryan said he he'd been overwhelmed by the amount of messages he has received from well-wishers.

"I'm so touched by the camaraderie of the racing community," he said on Tuesday."The cards, phone calls and messages have been unbelievable - they've come from everywhere - and I do appreciate that."
