THE world's richest Derby takes place in Japan on Sunday when Gold Ship (Naosuke Sugai/Hiroyuki Uchida) bids to follow up his Satsuki Sho (2,000 Guineas) success in the Tokyo Yushun.
The Japanese Derby, worth just over 339 million yen (£2.7m), features the first five home in last month's Guineas over 1m2f at Nakayama, where Gold Ship scoredby two and a half lengths from World Ace (Yasutoshi Ikee/Yuichi Fukuna).
Connections of Satsuki Sho favourite Grandezza (Osame Hirata/Kenichi Ikezoe) will be hoping for better than his fifth place at Nakayama while last year's champion two-year-old Alfredo (Takahisa Tezuka/Yutaka Take) comes here after a good second in the Grade 1 NHK Mile Cup.
Another fancied runner is late-developing Tosen Homareboshi (Yasutoshi Ikee/Craig Williams).
