Spifer out to put Botti on top in all-weather battle

DAVID EVANS has been relentless in his quest to land this winter's all-weather trainers' title but Newmarket trainer Marco Botti has the chance to usurp him at the top of the standings by landing a share of the £19,000 on offer in the 1m2f handicap at Kempton this evening.

Botti, who trails Evans by £1,198 after 30 winter winners, saddles the former Luca Cumani-trained Spifer, who got off the mark on his third outing for Botti at today's track in January.

Despite dropping a furlong in trip today and racing off a 2lb higher mark for his short-head victory, Botti is expecting a bold show from the five-year-old.

He said: "He seems to handle Kempton well and coming back in trip is not a big thing. He has a good draw and although he doesn't win very often and not by far, I thought he won with something in hand last time."

Evans is also in action at Kempton, as he runs Haadeeth and The Mongoose in two of the supporting races, and also sends Honey Of A Kitten to Lingfield for the 1m2f handicap as he bids to add to his 47 winners this winter.

As well as Kempton and Lingfield on the all-weather, Catterick, Downpatrick and Fontwell stage jumps racing on Wednesday.

Today's goings
Kempton Standard
Lingfield Standard
Catterick Good
Fontwell Good to soft, good in places on the chase course
and good, good to soft in places on the hurdle track.

Downpatrick Yielding, good to yielding in places
