Henderson on Arkle
trail with Captain Conan
THE weather may have claimed two of the star names that were due to line up at Cheltenham on Sunday in Sprinter Sacre and Darlan but there is plenty to whet the appetite starting with the Racing Post Arkle Trial (1.10).
Trainers Paul Nicholls and David Pipe have been dominating the Paddy Power meeting so far but it is Nicky Henderson who has the strongest contender in the 2m Grade 2 in the shape of Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle winner Captain Conan.
The five-year-old is yet to race over fences but has pleased Henderson with his schooling at Seven Barrows.
"He's always been a chaser and that's why we were going quietly with him last year. He's been super in his schooling," Henderson said.
"He looks like he might stay but everything he does at home suggests he's a two-miler."
There is top racing on the rest of the Cheltenham card with the Racing Post Hurdle sure to attract plenty of attention while Fontwell hosts Britain's other meeting on Sunday with the Southern National the highlight.
In Ireland, Punchestown passed a morning inspection and goes ahead while there is also action at Cork.
Punchestown: Heavy, soft to heavy in places
Fontwell: Good to soft, soft in places
Cork: Hurdles: Soft Chase: Soft to heavy, heavy in places
