Call The Police - Thurles 03.01.13

Call The Police foils Dubh at Thurles

Report: Thurles, Thursday

Beamish Stout Phil Sweeney Memorial Chase (Grade 3) 2m2f

CALL THE POLICE, in receipt of 7lb, got the better of Foildubh in a protracted battle as the pair pulled well clear of their three rivals with almost a mile to race and were never more than a length apart in what was a tense finish.

The pair, who took things up in the back straight when the early pace-setter Odonimee's jumping went to pieces, fought it out all the way to the line with Walsh's mount just getting the better of his opponent after the last.

There was never more than a length between the two from the time Walsh took things up until the line, with the injection of pace blowing the field apart as the two began their duel.

With each fence the picture changed slightly, but over the course of the final five fences it was Call The Police who jumped the better and come the line it counted, with half a length between the pair.

After the last Paul Carberry momentarily looked like he was going to lay down a serious challenge on Foildubh, but Walsh always had the pair covered and pulled out plenty to win cosily in the end.

Winning trainer Willie Mullins said: "I had that race in mind for him - it's a nice prize. We will keep him to two, two and a half miles for now and he might come back here for the Kinloch Brae."
