Appel Au Maitre repeats Stockholm Cup romp

Taby: Stockholm Cup

APPEL AU MAITRE ran away with the Group 3 Stockholm Cup at Taby on Sunday, leaving his owners toying with a crack at the Arc although his trainer Wido Neuroth is more interested in the Preis von Europa at Cologne on the Sunday after next.

The son of Starborough beat Peas and Carrots by eight lengths having beaten the same horse by eight and a quarter lengths here 12 months ago.

The difference is that he was ridden out on that occasion whereas this time Fredrik Johansson sent him to the front half a mile out and he strolled clear. He could not have won more easily.

Neuroth is keen to boost the colt's rating with an eye on an invitation to the Hong Kong Vase.
He believes that he has a much better chance of doing so in the Europa. He also has half an eye on the Gran Premio del Jockey Club at San Siro.

Calrissian  gained his first win in ten appearances this year when beating three imports from
Argentina - Tamburello, Relampago Plus and Maxim's - in the Group 3 Taby Open Sprint Championship.

Lars Kelp, who trains him at Klampenborg,
Copenhagen, said: "It took him time to recover from the experience. He has run okay since his return but performed better for Manuel Martinez. He rode Calrissian last time and learnt how to relax him in a race."
