Standing Ovation brings up four-timer in Trophy

Report: Wincanton, Saturday

Badger Ales Trophy (Listed) 3m1½f, 4yo+

STANDING OVATION arrived at Wincanton in fine form following three victories in handicap company and the improving chaser proved he belongs at Listed level when he delivered in devastating style for trainer David Pipe, who was winning the contest for the third time in seven years.

The six-year-old, who was racing in the colours of the late David Johnson for the Bravo Partnership, stretched clear up the home straight in the manner of a horse firmly on the upgrade to score by five lengths, much to the delight of favourite backers.

The 5-2 market leader was given a bold ride by Conor O'Farrell, who booted his mount clear after the second-last fence, and the winning rider said: "Mr Johnson was very, very good to me. He always gave me chances when he could and it is a privilege to ride a winner in his colours."

Graded chases surely beckon for Standing Ovation, who began his winning spree at Exeter last month and followed up at Wincanton.

Alfie Spinner had no answer to the winner's superior finishing kick on the run for home and, despite attempting to claw back the deficit up the straight, was no closer than when crossing the line.

The 16-1 shot held on for second from Court By Surprise, who stayed on from off the pace to grab third.
