South Africa: Top three-year-old Gimmethegreenlight has been retired to stud after injuring a ligament, putting paid to a planned international campaign.
Trainer Justin Snaith said: "He suffered a slight suspensory strain and the decision to retire him was a close call. He could have carried on racing but it was decided that he is too valuable at stud.
"I was gutted when I heard of his injury as he was my best horse and I had planned to make my international debut with him in Singapore next year."
The Australian-bred son of More Than Ready became the first three-year-old for 39 years to win the historic Queen's Plate in January and three weeks later made history again by becoming the highest-weighted three-year-old ever to run a place in the J & B Met when beaten little more than a length into third behind Horse of the Year Igugu.
He is the highest-rated three-year-old (117) in South Africa.
Gimmethegreenlight's Queen's Plate win carried an automatic Breeders' Cup entry but owner Hassen Adams, who at one time also had horses with Dermot Weld in Ireland, had already ruled this out because of quarantine conditions. Instead he was to race in Singapore and Dubai.
Adams has sold "a large portion" of the colt to Susan Kalmanson and the horse will stand at her Varsfontein Stud near Paarl at a fee still to be announced.
