Big Buck's seeks historic win on day one of Aintree

A THRILLING opening day of the Grand National meeting, which features four Grade 1s, could start in historic style as Big Buck's bids for 17 consecutive victories.

Provided there is no shock in the opening BGC Partners Liverpool Hurdle the relentless Big Buck's will extend the tally he shares with three-time Champion Hurdle winner Sir Ken, set in the 1950s.

His closest threat in the market is Smad Place, who finished seven lengths in third when the pair met in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at Cheltenham last month.

Quoted on his website, his trainer Alan King said: "He produced a superb effort at Cheltenham and could not have taken the race better.

"He impressed when schooling over six hurdles on Monday morning and this week's rain on Merseyside is definitely a bonus. For Smad Place, the more rain the merrier."

After a dry day, the chase and hurdle tracks on the Mildmay course changed to good to soft (from good to soft, soft in places) on Wednesday afternoon.
