High-class Slumdog sidelined until next year
South Africa: This season's SA Classic winner Slumdogmillionaire, a leading fancy for the Vodacom Durban July, will miss South Africa's biggest race on July 7 and is not expected to race again until next year.
Trainer Gavin van Zyl reported on his website: "A bone chip has been discovered in his near-fore fetlock joint and this needs to be surgically removed. He is likely to be out of racing for the remainder of the year with the prognosis for a full recovery being good."
Slumdogmillionaire won the SA Classic at Turffontein on March 31 by a head from Pomodoro, who franked the form when dead-heating with Royal Bencher in last Saturday's SA Derby.
The colt was second-favourite for the Durban July but has now been removed from the lists.
This season's Cape Derby winner Jackson is 28-10 favourite with Betting World, who make Mike de Kock's recent big-race winners Europa Point and Ilha Bela second-favourites at 10-1.
