Hannon looking for  Guineas pair to shine

TRAINER Richard Hannon bids to put the disappointment of Toronado’s unplaced effort in the 2,000 Guineas behind him as he saddles two contenders - Sky Lantern and Maureen - in today’s Qipco 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Sky Lantern reopposes Nell Gywn winner Hot Snap, the 11-4 favourite for the Classic, on 3lb better terms as she bids to turn around a two-and-a-quarter-length defeat.

“Sky Lantern bounces off fast ground, and the more the sun shines the better her chance,” Hannon said. “She was giving 3lb to Hot Snap in the Nell Gwyn Stakes there last month, so on level terms we’d hope to get a bit closer.

While Sky Lantern was second in her trial, Maureen won the Fred Darling, with her victory coming on good to soft.

“Maureen would relish soft ground,” Hannon said. “She stayed the seven furlongs well in the Fred Darling at Newbury, but we are going into unknown territory over the mile.

“However, Hughesie [Richard Hughes], who was always going to stick with Sky Lantern, being a Group 1 winner, reckons Olivier Peslier will suit Maureen perfectly, and if she does stay she could be a big player as she has a potent finishing kick.”

The ground at Newmarket remained good to firm after a dry night with officials applying 3mm of water last night from the mile to the winning line.

The Channel 4 cameras are at Salisbury to show one race - the Betfred "City Bowl" Handicap at 2.20 - while Hamilton, Limerick and Sligo complete the day’s agenda in Britain and Ireland.

Sunday going report

Hamilton: Soft, Good to Soft in places
Salisbury: Good to Firm (watered)
