Opinion gets go-ahead for Old Newton Cup
OPINION, 5-1 favourite with the sponsor to follow up his Royal Ascot victory in the bet365 Old Newton Cup at Haydock, has been given the go-ahead for Saturday's race.
On Tuesday, Opinion's owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing were waiting for trainer Sir Michael Stoute to decide whether the Duke of Edinburgh winner would be targeted at the £100,000 contest.
However, Highclere tweeted on Wednesday: "Opinion heads to Haydock for the Old Newton Cup on Saturday."
Guarantee, another Highclere-owned Old Newton Cup entry, seems less likely to take his chance. The four-year-old's trainer William Haggas said: "He wants cut in the ground and I don't think he'll go to Haydock unless there is plenty of rain.
"We have a Listed handicap at York next week as another option. Guarantee was a good horse last season and I don't know what's gone wrong so far this year [well beaten in both starts in Group company]."
