Sedgefield: precisely six and three-quarter inches of snow on the trackPICTURE: John Grossick
Sedgefield forced to abandon Saturday card
SEDGEFIELD officials had admitted on Tuesday that "something akin to a miracle" was needed for the track to stage its scheduled Saturday fixture, but instead of receiving a miracle the racecourse received more snow, a setback that prompted its abandonment early on Wednesday morning.
The County Durham venue has held out little hope of hosting a rare weekend meeting ever since the cold snap started and clerk of the course Charlie Moore was keen to wave the white flag as quickly as possible.
Moore said: "It was probably the easiest decision I have ever had to make. To be precise, we have got six and three-quarter inches of snow on the track. The forecasts say there isn't the remotest hope of that thawing in time, but even if it did the track would end up pretty wet after the disappearance of six and three-quarter inches of snow.
"I spoke to the BHA and asked them if it was okay to abandon at this early stage and they gave me permission to do so. By abandoning early in the morning, it also means that the girls working here will be able to get things organised and leave before it gets dark.
"Two of them weren't able to get in at all today, one performed heroics to do so and one of my groundstaff is stuck 20 minutes down the road, which shows how difficult the conditions around here are."
