Donn Halling denies Altano by a short head
Report: Italy, Saturday
San Siro: St Leger Italiano (Group 1) 1m6f, turf, 3yo.
CZECH Republic-trained challenger Donn Halling (Vaclav Luka/Valclav Janacek) pulled off a 30-1 shock to defeat last year's winner Altano by a short head.
Donn Halling, who is unbeaten in five starts at home but came here on the back of two defeats in Germany, held on tenaciously in a three-way photo to deny Altano's late thrust, with Slowfoot a short neck away third, the trio pulling five lengths clear of the next finisher.
It is now ten years since Italy provided the winner of their own St Leger, when Maktub scored for Bruno Grizzetti and Mirco Demuro in 2002.
