The 2011 Champion Hurdle runner-up was having a first start since finishing eighth in the Jewson Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and he found Sam Winner too sharp on his return to action.
Sam Winner, fourth in the Triumph Hurdle of 2011, had finished fifth at Sandown last month and that extra race fitness gave him the crucial advantage. Ruby Walsh had ridden the Paul Nicholls-trained 7-1 chance prominently for much of the race and after looking like he was going to be swallowed turning in he rallied to win by two lengths.
Peddlers Cross, sent off the 5-4 favourite, finished three quarters of a length in front of Megastar.
Donald McCain, trainer of Peddlers Cross, said: "That was grand as he was cantering all over them in the straight but just took a blow and I told Jason [Maguire] not to be too hard on him.
"I don't know where we will go now but he wants decent ground wherever we go."
