Maryland: Hunt Cup 4m, turf

GOLD CUP-winning rider Sam Waley-Cohenfinished third in the Maryland Hunt Cup on Saturday, over 4m and 22 fences.

Riding Bon Caddo, Long Run's partner became the first British jockey to complete the race for a number of years, though several have ridden in it.

The 116th running, worth $75,000, went to Twill Do - also the winner in 2010 - with Battle op second. Only half of the 12 runners completed the race.

"I think he likes the distance and he likes thisground, so it was sort of similar conditions to two years ago," winning jockey James Stierhoff told The Baltimore Sun.

"I had my fingers crossed that he would sort of pop up and do the same thing. We went flying into the last [fence] and he got it and kicked on."

The victory capped an improbable comeback for 12-year-old Twill Do, who was sidelined for several months after suffering bruised ribs at last year's Grand National.

"This is remarkable to have come back and [done] this," owner Lucy Goelet said. "He basically started hunting again in September. Billy [Meister, trainer] believed in the horse. James believed in the horse. I believed in the horse."
