Cristoforo Colombo clear Coventry favourite

AIDAN O'BRIEN'S dominance in Britain could well continue throughout Royal Ascot, with Cristoforo Colombo emerging as a clear favourite for the Coventry Stakes on the opening day of the five-day meeting.

Coral have cut the Ballydoyle-trained runner to 7-2 favourite (from 6-1) after the colt was the subject of a sustained gamble for the Royal Ascot contest on Tuesday.

"Cristoforo Colombo won his maiden at Navan nicely enough last month, but the money we've seen for the colt suggests the required step up in class next week wi ll be well within his grasp," said Coral's David Stevens.

O'Brien has won the race six times, including last year with subsequent Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Power, his first success in the race since Henrythenavigator was triumphant in 2007.

Coral Coventry Stakes betting: 7-2 Cristoforo Colombo, Dawn Approach, 5 Englishman, 7 Lines Of Battle, 8 Move To Strike, The Taj, 10 Funk Soul Brother, 12 Cougar Ridge, Havana Gold, Jalaa, 14 Artigiano, 16 Pearl Acclaim, 20 New Pearl, Reckless Abandon
