Salsify lands Foxhunter for Sweeney family
Report: Cheltenham, Friday
Christie's Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup (Class 2) 3m2½f
SALSIFY, ridden by Colman Sweeney on a horse owned by his mother and trained by his father, came from near last to win the Christie's Foxhunter Chase under a fine waiting ride.
In the early stages the pair were settled some 20 lengths off the pace and with a circuit to go they were even further back. However Sweeney was incredibly patient and picked his moment, waiting well into the home straight to deliver his challenge.
"I'll take any ban they want to give me," said a delighted Sweeney, who only decided to ride again because of the horse. "I was 13st 10lb in December, but the family and the wife put some huge amount of pressure on me to lose it so I could ride this fella and I'm glad I did, this is such a sweet win."
Chapoturgeon finished a gallant second, Oscar Delta was third with the only mare in the field, My Flora, fourth.
