Riders in the wars at Cork on Friday evening
EARLY falls in the evening at Cork for former champion jockeys Ruby Walsh and Paul Townend led to them being stood down for the night with minor soft tissue injuries but other riders were not so lucky and were taken to Cork University Hospital.
Tim Carroll suffered an abdominal injury from his fall from Urban Desert in the 2m handicap hurdle, while an incident in the 3m handicap hurdle saw both Rheinland and Status Update come down. Their respective riders, Jody McGarvey and Kevin Sexton, were taken to hospital for collarbone x-rays.
"With the ground so firm, there's much more potential for injuries," said Turf Club Medical Officer Adrian Murphy at the end of a busy night.
There were also four equine fatalities. Kathleensluckylad broke down fatally in the opening maiden hurdle while in the same race Activefreedy collapsed going to the fourth last flight.
Scene Of The Crash suffered a fatal fall in the 2m handicap hurdle while in the same race Farm Street broke down fatally after being involved in some scrimmaging off the home bend.
